Kim Myers Travels The Farm Trail

Date: Oct. 2, 2016
Location: Broome County, NY

Candidate for Congress Kim Myers (NY-22) got a taste of some of Upstate New York's home-grown products Saturday during a tour on Broome County's Farm Trail. Sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Farm Trail showcases a Farmers Market with locally grown fruits and vegetables and fresh baked goods, local farms that raise livestock and produce fresh milk, cheese and yogurt.

"This is such a great way to highlight some of the local farm businesses and products made right here at home," said Kim Myers.

Myers campaign platform includes improved infrastructure that will help our farmers to participate in the growing "farm-to-table" demands within our area and downstate. Plus, she has advocated for opportunities with schools and other institutional buyers because"farm-to-school" is a win-win. Local farmers can benefit by selling to schools and children can benefit from the nutritional value early in life.

Separate from the Farm Trail, Myers also stopped at the Binghamton Brewing Company. Started in 2014, it uses local ingredients like hops and malt to create their specialty craft brews. As the only "Farm Brewery" in Broome County, it uses 20% of New York State hops and malt in its products. Craft and microbreweries like this one are helping to revitalize the Upstate New York economy.

"We have abundant, rich farmland," says Myers. "Among my priorities are lifting the federal ban on industrial hemp farming, and investing in research and expansion of hops growth. As these industries grow, businesses will develop around them to get their products out to market."

Kim rounded out her day with a stop to meet with voters at the Great Cortland Pumpkinfest. She greeted people among the entertainment, food, crafts and, of course, pumpkins!
